InterPoll will show nodes both with their name and with their MacTCP
address if you have LIST ALIASES turned on (in the options menu).
With LIST ALIASES turned on, an entry is created for each network function
the node is performing. If you have lot of net functions running (MacTCP,
fileshareing, Timbucktu, etc.) you'll get lots of entries for each node.
This can be a pain, and is why I think most people have LIST ALIASES
turned off. But if you display things sorted by node, what you want is
there.
Or use MacPing (demo version available in the archives, I think). It will
also display these other net functions, but you have to mouse down on an
entry to get it to display. Not as convient for what you describe, I think.

I purchased the AppleScript RunTime Kit a few months ago and now have
PlainTalk up and running, but I'm still waiting for an AppleScript

I resorted to writing my own one weekend, but it occassionally crashes.
If anyone has any advice, I'd appreciate it.
Likewise, I'm wondering about the AV's Finder being scriptable. . . I'm
still using AppleScript's FinderLib. How does one get the scriptable

Subject: Electromagnetic Shielding for a Monitor (A)
A couple of people pointed out that the company I was looking for is NoRad,
and Tom Scott pointed me to their current ads (p69, Aug. or p192 Oct. '93
MacWorld). (Thanks Tom) Michael Jensen has a similar problem and asked me
to post the answer. NoRad is still in the business of manufacturing
shields of several designs, at least one of which appears (from the add) to
be what I'm looking for, a Mumetal frame that clamps around the sides, top,
and back of a CRT like a big set of ear muffs. Shielding 60 Hz magnetic
fields is harder than shielding either static magnetic fields or electric
fields at any frequency. The shield has to be a high permeability material
(like iron) so that it can "absorb" the field but has to also have low
coercivity and retentivity (like Mumetal) so it can follow the fast changes
in the field. A short conversation with a salesman at NoRad (310-605-0808)
produced the information that their frame system is indeed Mumetal and they
do sell them for curing 60 Hz magnetic field jitters. I'll order a couple
of their kits and report to anyone interested.
------
I received several responses from people that would seem to indicate a fair
amount of misunderstanding out in the community about shielding CRT's, so
in the hope of laying some of it to rest (and maybe help shield a CRT or
two) I'm adding the pedantic parargaph below. Anyone not troubled by a
jittering CRT should skip the rest of this.
It requires a surprisingly small magnetic field to shift the image on a
CRT. As everyone knows, an electron beam is deflected by a perpendicular
magnetic field. For a beam at any particular velocity, the product of the
radius of curvature and magnetic field strength is a constant. The graph
in front of me says that this value (H-rho) for a 10kev electron beam is
roughly 300 Gauss-cm. Thus, a half Gauss field (roughly the earth's field)
produces a 600 cm radius of curvature for this beam. If you track this
along the 30 or so cm distance between the electron gun and screen of a
typical large-screen CRT, you discover the beam is deflected 0.7 cm, or a
bit over a quarter of an inch. This is a static deflection which shifts
the whole image as a unit. Thus it isn't particularly noticable (big screen
CRTs have centering controls for just this reason). But now consider the
case where one has 200-300 Watts of florescent light overhead, wired in
worst-case fashion, with roughly two or three amps of current flowing in a
big loop formed by the tube(s) and the feed wires (I'm assuming the feed is
off to one side of the fixtures, as frequently happens, and they are all
wired in parallel). A loop with a couple of meters area, a meter and a
half overhead will produce a 60 Hz field approaching a hundreth of a Gauss
(10 mGauss). This doesn't sound like much (it is fifty times weaker than
the earth's field), but now it is jerking the image on the screen back and
fourth 60 times a second. A Macintosh screen is typically scanned 68 times
a second, so what your eye sees is an image that swimms back and forth at
the difference frequency of 8 times a second. The peak to peak motion is
one eighteenth (two times 1.4 times a fiftyth) of the static deflection
mentioned above or about a seventyth of an inch. Again, this doesn't sound
like much, but it is one sixth of the width of the character in a nine
point font, and it is "swimming" at a frequency your eye is *very*
sensitive to. Your eye can see, and object to, much smaller jitters than
this. The *only* way to kill such jitter is to either shield the tube or
null out that external field with a set of coils (also powered by 60 Hz
line current) which can balance out the field over the volume of the CRT.
Believe me, except in extraordinary circumstances, arranging nulling coils
is more trouble than it is worth.

macros and toolbars on startup in 15 seconds (timed). Quitting is a
different story, however...

Alex, I had (still have) the same problem with my SE/30. I was told by info-
mac readers that, according to Pina's _Dead Mac Scrolls_, the problem is a
burned out Bourns filter on your logic. Apparently, if you're handy with a
soldering iron, then the fix is not too dear; otherwise, a replacement logic
board is in order. Because I'm not handy with a soldering iron at all,
myself,
I would have had (still have to) replace the logic board, except ...
I've been meaning to post this for some time, now, but just never got around
to it. Please find attached instructions by Mark Nutter (who's given me
permission to post) to hack your System to hide the problem. Note, this hack
only _hides_ the problem, and does not solve it. It's a wondering hack that
has allowed me to continue using my Mac until I have saved enough money to
replace the logic board, something I intend to do in about two years. (Yes,
I want to hang on to my venerable SE/30 ;-)
So, without further ado, here 'tis. I hope this helps.

WARNING:
=======
According to Mark Nutter, this has only been tested up through System 7.0.1
"tuned." Of course, you should have a backup of your System in case of errors
(after all, even if you make no mistakes, your System file would still be
corrupted if, for example, there was a momentary power failure while you had
it open with ResEdit). Furthermore, implementing this hack prevents you from
initialising a floppy disc using your internal floppy drive. My work-around
is to use DiskCopy 4.2 disc images of blank floppies to `initialise' any new
floppies.
Organization: Indiana University of Pennsylvania
X-Envelope-To: jbthoo@ucdavis.edu
Ok, here goes:
First you will need a copy of ResEdit, preferably version 2.1 or later. If
you
don't already have it you can get it via anonymous ftp from ftp.apple.com in
the (I think) /dts/mac/tools/resedit directory.
Normally, I would caution you to work with a copy of your System file but in
this case your file may be too big to make a copy of, and anyway you said you
had a backup of it, so that should be sufficient to protect you in case of
problems.
So, boot up your Mac and get ResEdit running. (Think of it as a new arcade
game *wry grin*)
Once you are in ResEdit, File menu -> Open. Open up your System file. This
will give you a screen full of icons representing the various types of
resources stored in your System file.
Look for the resource called PACK and double click on it. This will give you
a
list of all the PACK-type resources in your System.
Find the resource with the ID number 2 and click once (not twice) to select
it,
then pull down the Resource menu and select Open Using Hex Editor. This will
open up a window displaying the PACK 2 resource in hexadecimal form. (If you
get a warning about the resource being compressed, tell it you want to edit
the
resource anyway.)
Bear with me a minute while I go over the hex editor layout. :)
The hex editor window is generally divided into 3 columns. The left-hand
column is a column of hexadecimal numbers starting at zero and increasing by 8
(hexadecimal) every row. These numbers represent the "offset" or distance
from
the beginning of the resource. The middle column consists of a number of
four-digit hexadecimal numbers which represent the data that is stored in the
resource. The right hand column consists of rows of mixed characters;
letters,
numbers, and a lot of periods. This column shows you the same data as the
middle column does, only as ASCII characters instead of as hexadecimal
numbers.
Ok, we are ready to do the "surgery" now. You should have a Find menu as the
last menu in your menu bar; pull it down and select Find Hex. A window will
open up with "Search for:" and "Change to:" fields.
In the "Search for:" field, type 4E754E56
In the "Replace with:" field, type 4E754E75
Now click the Find button. ResEdit should select the letters 4E754E56 on row
0000A8, plus or minus a row.
Click on the Change button (NOT the "Change All" button!), and then Quit
ResEdit, saving your changes to the System file.
That should be sufficient to "lobotomize" the Disk Initialization Package that
keeps hitting you with the "Bad Disk" dialog. If not, let me know and we'll
try again. Just be sure to keep your backup System copy safe! :)

Jeffrey,
We just went through this, so I think I can provide a pretty good summary.
There are now two programs: CPP I and CPP II.
Colleges that were previously classified as HEPP II can qualify for CPP II
with a minimum of fuss. There is no inventory requirement. Essentially,
the requirements are:
1) Provide an "Information Center" where students can come and see
Macintosh demo models, obtain price lists, etc. This would usually be in
the Computer Center.
2) Provide some sort of service option. The university can provide its
own authorized service, outsource it to a third-party, or use a combination
of the two.
And that's about it. There's probably a few things that I'm forgetting,
but that's the gist of it.
As for CPP I, it requires that the university resell Macs. That means they
do have to keep some inventory, but the requirements are not large. The
advantage is, the university gets lower pricing. They usually sell to
departments at that lower price, but raise the prices to CPP II levels when
selling to individuals in order to recover their costs. So, individuals
get the same price as before.
There are definitely some points that have to be negotiated between your
university and Apple, but it certainly can be done. Apple is in the
business to sell computers and not approving a contract for you is not in
its best interest.
As I said, this is a rough approximation of the requirements. Use it only
for info. Contact your Apple Rep for complete details.

Howdy,
In a recent issue of the digest, an item
titled "new disk drives - apple propoganda"
started as follows:
] [I think they mean "eject"]
]
] o New Version of Disk Drive in Macintosh Computers - FYI
]
] Apple Computer, Inc. is scheduled to begin incorporating a new version of
the
] Apple SuperDrive floppy disk drive into Apple Macintosh desktop computers
] starting this month.
Evidently, one of the moderators added that comment on the first line
because the author of the item, PELTIERD@LAWRENCE.EDU, says that he
did not say that.
So, assuming that this is correct, let me try to straighten the record
a bit. The didn't mean "eject", they meant "inject". The new drives
will lack auto-inject, a feature that grabs the meadia and sucks it
into the drive. Some other devices that have auto-inject are VCRs and
DuoDocks (not MiniDocks).
If you read the rest of the item, you will see that it explicitly states
that the new drives still have auto-eject. It's up to you, but you might
want to post something to stop the spread of this rumor you may have
inadvertantly caused. I do know that there were lots and lots of flames
posted comp.sys.mac.hardware when it first came out that Apple was
considering dropping auto-eject. In fact, there was such a huge negative
response that I think this announcement may have been designed aprimarily
to reassure people that Macs will continue to have auto-eject drives.

Subject: Macs---To Leave on or not?
Here is yet another comment for the ongoing discussion about whether
to shut a Mac off when not in use:
I have had two Macs for the past 4 1/2 years a IIx at work and a
IIx -> IIfx at home. I shut the IIx off every day but NEVER turn off
the IIfx (except for cleaning, hardware upgrades, etc.). Neither
has had any problems over that period. If there is any conceivable
risk in either strategy, it is probably component failure due to
electrical transients during startup, but I have yet to see an actual
case of this anywhere.
In regard to disk fatigue, the mean-time-between-failure rate of most
good hard disks these days is > 150,000 or even 200,000 hours. That's
20+ YEARS!! I cannot believe that anyone will use a single hard drive
continuously for that period of time and ignore the vast new technology
that obviously lies ahead.
As far as electricty consumption is concerned, the amount used by
home computers is insignificant compared to the total used by a typical
residence or business.
Bottom line: Leave on or turn off -- makes no difference.

Works perfectly for me, but I use DiskCopy (shareware from Roger Bates,
available on sumex) to mount the image files instead of MountImage. I
think the "image mounting" capabilities work only after paying the
shareware fee - you get instructions on what to do to tell your app that

DiskCopy can read Apple's image files. It can also create image files, but
these can not be used by Apple's Disk Copy program. They seem to be in a

Subject: NewsWatcher for Systems 6 and 7 Available
NewsWatcher is a Macintosh news reading program being developed by
John Norstad at Northwestern University. The versions of the program
he distributes will run only under System 7. With his permission,
Brown University is now distributing a version which has been modified
to run under System 6 as well.
The version Brown is distributing, 2.0d13m01, is identical to version
2.0d13 which John Norstad distributed, except for addition of System 6
support. It does not correspond to the current version John Norstad is
distributing, which is 2.0d15.
To obtain version 2.0d13m01, use anonymous FTP to ftp.brown.edu.
NewsWatcher is in the file:
/pub/mac/NewsWatcher/NewsWatcher_2.0d13m01.sea.hqx
The THINK C source is in the file:
/pub/mac/NewsWatcher/NewsWatcher_2.0d13m01_source.sea.hqx
The FTP site for the latest (System 7 only) version from John Norstad
is ftp.acns.nwu.edu.
Brown University developed this version so that we can support news
for all our Macintosh users, including those still running System 6.
We strongly encourage users to upgrade to System 7. However, on our
campus, it's too soon to require that everyone run System 7 in order
to use the supported news program.
Modifying NewsWatcher for System 6 required a considerable effort.
Also, as John Norstad continues to develop NewsWatcher, it will
become more difficult to modify it to run under System 6. As a
result, we do not have any plans for modifying future versions of
NewsWatcher for System 6. We consider 2.0d13m01 a temporary
solution, to allow users more time to upgrade to System 7.
**** IMPORTANT ****
Version 2.0d13m01 is not supported in any way by John Norstad.
Please do not direct questions about it to him. I'm willing to
support the changes made for System 6, but will not be able to help
with NewsWatcher problems unrelated to the changes I made.

Subject: Printing Postscript Files
There have been several questions recently about how to print postscript
files, such as those received from unix systems with the suffix .ps, which
would be printed on a unix box by using lpr.
I have used both ShowPages and DropPS with success. Both are free from
sumex-aim.
One common problem seems to be that many .ps files contain the command
"setduplexmode" which causes a laserwriter error. The solution is simple:
run the file through a text editor and delete all "setduplexmode"s (note-
there may be more than one.)
I discovered this problem because DropPS, when it failed, actually printed
out an error message on the printer; ShowPages failed, but gave no
indication of why. This is about the only major difference between the two
applications that I've noticed. One other difference is that ShowPages uses
the usual background printing system via the PrintMonitor, so you can do
things like delay the printing, etc.; DropPS uses its own system, which
doesn't afford these features. On the other hand, DropPS does give a
progress bar, which ShowPages doesn't (and since the PrintMonitor thinks
the document is one page long, there's no way to see how much is left to
go.)

Question, does anybody know of any incompatibilities of the 840av with
the Apple Extended Keyboard II? Currently I am having random occurances
of garbage being outputed upon pressing of a letter on the keyboard. This
phenomenon repeats itself for a while and then just up and stops. Don't
know what is causing it or even if it can be traced to any one key.
However, what essentially happens is this: I press a key and randomly it
will shoot out a line of garbage much like that which you get when you
have line noise except, I am not using a modem to be able to dismiss it
as line noise. It can really be frustrating when you are trying to type up
a letter or use SoftAT.
Also, does anyone know whether Apple's Hardware System Update 2.0 is

I've recently run into a problem with Quicken 4's reporting

one particular file, but other files make it happen, too. This
happens on a Centris 650 and a IIcx, both running System 7.1, and
turning extensions off doesn't help.
The crash manifests itself in several ways, but it seems that
Quicken writes garbage into memory when this function is invoked.
On two occasions, it wrote a block of garbage into the SCREEN!
Intuit technical support is stumped; they asked for copies of my
files after they couldn't replicate the problem. I even
reinstalled the software (to no avail).
Intuit technical support tells me, by the way, about two other
bugs in Quicken 4. First, adding to the list of goals (for
portfolio accounts) doesn't work right; neither do reports
subtotaled by goal. Second, for some files, Quicken 4 cannot "Save
a copy..." Instead, it displays an alert with the cryptic error
message:J"Error. Can't add , it already exists."J(The space before
the comma is not my typo; it appears in the message.) AJ
maintenance upgrade is in the works to fix these and other bugs
that Intuit didn't tell me about. They are currently taking names
and addresses of people who call in about these problems. Intuit
technical support's number appears in the Quicken 4 User's Guide

I've been installing GateKeeper 1.2.8 on several machines lately,

On two LC II's and one SE/30, I get notices from GK 1.2.8 that the
System is trying to modify the Finder (SetResAttr, CODE 18). I checked the
Finder with ResEdit, and CODE resouce # 18 seems to be ApplEvent-related,
so I'm not sure what's trying to modify it or why.
I sent mail to Chris Johnston last week, but haven't heard from it
yet, and figured this was a likely place to find suggestions and/or
sympathy.
These 'violations' occur at random intervals -- up to 2 seconds
apart, while using the computer, on the SE/30 and one LC II. For the
moment, I just installed the Disinfectant INIT, which we normally don't use
in favor of the GateKeeper package. I don't want to go back to 1.2.7 or
approve this action in case this is important -- not seeing the problem
doesn't guarantee its absence. It doesn't look like a real virus, and
Disinfectant 3.2 certifies all 3 systems as clean, but I'm not sure.
All these machines are running System 7 (probably 7.0.1*).
Installed CPs/Extensions are: A/ROSE, KeyAccess, HSU 2, and DW 3.1 on the
LC II's only; Moire 4.01, SoftwareFPU 2.41 (I know it's old), WindowShade,

The new directory organisation is irrelevant to me because of the way I use
sumex. Here's the time-saving method I use:
1. Simply download the master index file (it's only 0.25Mb in size).
This is available as /info-mac/help/all-files.txt
You need only do this once every few months.
2. text search this file for what you want, for example on a UNIX machine
% grep superclock all-files.txt
which gives you
-r 26766 Apr 25 00:21 ./app/superclock-404.hqx
Obviously non-UNIX people can use any decent text editor to search for
text.
3. Download it from sumex in one easy hit!
Could this be easier? It saves you time, and saves sumex connect time. So
now
you see why I wouldn't care if sumex went to a flat directory structure :-)

Roger,
There is no problem having System 6 and System 7 machines sharing the same
printer. All you need is to make sure that all the Macs use the same
version of the LaserWriter driver. If you use the LaserWriter driver
version 7.0 or higher, you don't need the laser prep file (its built into
the LaserWriter driver itself). You can just copy the LaserWriter 7.x
driver into the System 6 system folders.
As far as spooling, if you're using AppleShare 2.0.1, it will complain
if it doesn't have a laser prep file on the server. I don't know if
this is the case for AppleShare 3.0.

Roger,
Yes, what you want is possible. The main thing you have to worry about
is the version of the LaserWriter dirve. In your case you should make
sure every Mac, may it be running 6.0.x or 7.x.x, have the same version
of the LaserWriter driver.
That should be it.

"super." The file list takes up 25% of the space on my account, so I cannot
keep it on my accoutn for reference. There should be a directory for control
panels. Seeing SuperClock in the Applications directory made my mind reel.
That's my two cents.

P.S. Does anyone out there know Rush Limbaugh's Compuserve number?

Subject: Tools for glossary maintenance
I have the honor of maintaining the glossary for a document being written
by a distributed committee. In addition to proper usage of terms in
the glossary, I need to identify terms that should be in the glossary.
I would very much like to find some tools to help identify technical
terms and phrases. I do my primary work on a Mac, but have access to
UNIX and Windows platforms.
Sincerely,
Marshall D. Abrams abrams@mitre.org

Subject: Using Speech Recognition (Q)
This seems to be too weird for me... but I keep getting "unimplemented
trap" errors on my NEW Centris 660 AV. I seem to only get the errors when
I have speech recognition ON... when it is shut off (from the control
panel), I don't seem to get these errors. BTW, I get these errors at
* Finder level
* TeachText
* Remember? 2.3.2
Does anyone else get these? Any suggestions? Am I just unlucky?

Subject: Video (TV) Display on a Mac?
Hi. I have a user who would like to display a live television image
in a window on his Mac. He has a Duo 230/Dock w/ 13" Hi-Res monitor.
We were looking at RadiusTV for this purpose, but apparently it has been
discontinued. We need to be able to connect him to a regular coax cable,
and all he wants to do is view - no storage, editing, etc. Simple and
cheap would be nice.
Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Subject: What Happened to All the Shareware Listings?
I just came out from under a rock and realized that almost no new [*] files
have been listed in InfoMac Digest since issue 175 (Sept 3). I don't see
any Administrivia note saying that new files will no longer be listed, so I
figure that the moderator is probably on vacation. Is that the case?

[I and Liam were away for almost three weeks, so Gordon burned himself
out keeping the digest going. He normally archives the files. -Bill]

Yup. There are. That's why you should use MacTCP 1.1.1 with 7.1.

Help! I'm trying to trash a font file, but I keep getting the message that it
can't be thrown away because it's damaged. I tried to repair it, then trash
it,
but no utility seems to be able to repair it. I tried holding down the option
key and trashing it; that didn't work. So I can't repair it and I can't get
rid
of it. It's the file from hell. How do I get rid of it? Thanks for anyone's
help.
